The Edge Evening Recap | October 30, 2026

Philadelphia survived a late push from the Knicks. Baylor dominated UCF. New Jersey took control in Vegas. And Calgary made it five straight wins at home—ending our Seattle moneyline ticket.

Philadelphia 98, New York 93: LeBron delivers the finish

New York erased an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit and briefly moved ahead on Jalen Brunson’s three with 1:32 remaining. Philadelphia answered through LeBron James and VJ Edgecombe, then James’ putback with 11.9 seconds left helped secure the win.

Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 27 points. James contributed 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists; Anfernee Simons added 21. Brunson finished with 24 for New York, while Karl-Anthony Towns had 22 points and 12 rebounds. Philadelphia improved to 5–1; New York dropped to 2–4.

The Edge: Philadelphia has now beaten the defending champions twice this season. That earns attention, but the finish deserves context: the Sixers still surrendered a sizable fourth-quarter advantage before recovering. Separate their ability to close from their ability to protect a lead.

What’s next: Philadelphia visits Charlotte on Saturday, October 31. New York hosts Brooklyn on Monday, November 2.

Baylor 41, UCF 9: Dominance on both sides

Baylor ended its two-game skid with a performance that went well beyond the scoreboard. DJ Lagway threw for 319 yards and four touchdowns, and the Bears produced a 503–283 advantage in total offense.

The defensive numbers explain why UCF never threatened: seven sacks, 12 tackles for loss and just 66 rushing yards allowed on 30 attempts. The Knights converted only 2 of 14 third downs.

Baylor led 20–6 at halftime, then opened the second half with consecutive touchdown drives. Lagway’s 77-yard touchdown connection with Gavin Freeman helped turn control into a rout. Baylor improved to 5–3; UCF fell to 4–4.

The Edge: This was a complete performance. Baylor created explosive plays while repeatedly putting UCF behind schedule. The question for the next matchup is whether that protection, pressure and execution carry forward—not simply whether the Bears can repeat 41 points.

What’s next: Baylor hosts Iowa State on November 7. UCF travels to Kansas that same day.

Calgary 6, Seattle 2: Five straight at home—and our ticket goes down

Calgary defended the Saddledome again. Matt Coronato delivered a career-best four points, Joel Farabee added three, and Dustin Wolf stopped 21 shots. Seattle pulled Philipp Grubauer after four goals on 14 shots.

The decisive matchup was special teams. Calgary converted both power-play opportunities, extending its recent run to 9-for-20. Seattle has now conceded 10 power-play goals on 17 opportunities across six games.

The Flames never trailed, despite losing their first two meetings with Seattle by identical 6–1 scores.

The Edge: Our Seattle moneyline ticket loses. Calgary’s home streak and power play carried more weight than our read allowed. The earlier head-to-head results offered context, but Seattle’s current penalty-kill problems were a direct threat in this matchup.

What’s next: Calgary visits Colorado on Saturday, October 31. Seattle’s next game is another meeting with the Flames, at home Wednesday, November 4.

New Jersey 5, Vegas 2: Four unanswered settle it

Vegas turned an early deficit into a 2–1 lead through Mark Stone and Ivan Barbashev. New Jersey answered and never let the game get away.

Arseny Gritsyuk and Jack Hughes each scored twice, Luke Hughes added the other goal, and Connor Hellebuyck made 19 saves. Gritsyuk’s equalizer followed Vegas’ go-ahead goal by less than a minute; Jack Hughes later restored New Jersey’s lead, and the Devils finished with four unanswered goals.

The Edge: The response mattered. New Jersey absorbed Vegas’ momentum, recovered quickly and kept the Knights scoreless after their early scoring burst. Hellebuyck has won both of his starts since joining the Devils—a promising opening, with a small sample still worth respecting.

What’s next: New Jersey hosts Edmonton on Tuesday, November 3. Vegas visits Boston on Monday, November 2.
