Ohio State at Indiana: When the Model Disagrees with the Market

Saturday's marquee matchup features No. 4 Ohio State at No. 5 Indiana, with major Big Ten and playoff implications.

The market: Ohio State is a 3.5-point road favorite in published Friday odds, with a total around 50.5–51.5 points.

The disagreement: ESPN's Football Power Index, as reported in this week's betting coverage, projects Ohio State by approximately 0.7 points—far closer than the market spread.

The key question is whether the market is properly pricing Ohio State's talent advantage or undervaluing Indiana's home-field advantage and season-long performance. Before taking a position, we would evaluate injuries, efficiency, defensive performance, expected possessions, and the available price.

Market watch: Indiana +3.5 merits comparison with independent projections, but this is a watchlist observation—not an official selection.

The Learning Edge: Price Matters

Predicting the winner is not enough to beat a spread. The objective is to determine whether the available line offers value relative to a defensible probability estimate.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING

College Football — Saturday, October 17

Nebraska +7.5 vs Oregon

Our baseline scoring model projects Nebraska 30.6, Oregon 28.1—a Nebraska win while we're getting more than a touchdown. That creates a 10-point difference between our projected margin and the +7.5 spread.

The extra half-point matters: an Oregon win by exactly seven still cashes our ticket.

Historical check: away dogs getting +7.5 to +10 that our model projected to win went 13–14 ATS. History doesn't establish an edge here; the case rests on the scoring projection and the cushion.

Official selection: Nebraska +7.5

UMass Moneyline vs Buffalo

The market has Buffalo favored, but our baseline scoring model points the other way: UMass 28.3, Buffalo 19.5.

That's an 8.8-point projected UMass victory. With that much separation in the scoring estimate, the moneyline is the direct way to back our projected winner.

This is a projection-based upset play. The model doesn't adjust for opponent strength, and our historical research hasn't established moneyline profitability.

NFL — Sunday, October 18

Cleveland Browns

Cleveland is the home underdog in this week's NFL slate. We'll evaluate whether the Browns' home-field advantage, defensive matchup, and projected scoring margin support the case for the projected underdog winner.
